Last November, I was at The Stockport Town v FC Oswestry Town game, in the North West Counties League. With a number of TNS FC players on loan at the latter, it was a chance to cover the match from their perspective.
It all came together late on match day, and it was only once I’d sorted a lift with the Oswestry manager and assistant manager, and contacted Stockport for media access, that I realised it was going to be the Robbie Savage comeback game
We got there early, and I took some things into the away dressing room, as well as capturing photographs as the players arrived. It was while I was in the tunnel area that I saw Robbie Savage having a chat with Steve Evans.
They’re both from Wrexham and have represented Wales at full international level. Steve is now the assistant manager at The New Saints FC, as well as turning out for Oswestry.
Spotting a media opportunity, I got my phone out to take a shot. I said carry on talking, but they were happy to pause and pose, and that’s the lead image above. Whether in media, or life itself, when a chance presents itself, take it.
As for the game, it was not the result that Oswestry wanted, as they went down 3-2. Robbie came on as a substitute with ten minutes to go and that remains the extent of the comeback so far.
I added a team sheet to my memorabilia collection that possibly has his name for the last time ever in a competitive fixture. Time will tell and we shall see.
