In the pre-match press conference ahead of the JD Cymru Premier MD25 encounter between Connah’s Quay Nomads and The New Saints FC, I put it to manager, Scott Ruscoe, that although we talk about must-win games, this in effect was a must-not-lose fixture.
With the Nomads going into the match one point ahead of the reigning champions, a 1-0 victory saw them now four points ahead in the race for the title and very much firmly in the driving seat.
The conditions didn’t help either side, as the wind made playing football extremely difficult. I don’t know the statistics for the second-half, but in the first period alone we had forty-seven throw-ins, as the gusts continually carried the ball out of play.
With the wind in their favour in the first-half, the home side scored in 45+7 to get their noses in front, which is where they continued right through to the final whistle.
The league title is now out of TNS’ hands, the first time that this has been the case since I started working with the club in August 2014. There are still seven games to go though, let’s see what happens.
The video below is from the club’s Facebook page and was filmed before kick-off. Putting music to the clips in this case wasn’t an option, courtesy of the wind.
