I always enjoy watching the Welsh Cup draws live (either on TV or the FAW’s social media accounts) and although from a club perspective you want a lower-ranking side at home, from a personal angle I want to be on the road somewhere I’ve never been before. It’s all about feeding the groundhopping gene.
However, when The New Saints were drawn out first, that didn’t materialise, certainly as far as round three is concerned anyway (last season we were away to Cwmbran Celtic at this stage). The visitors to Park Hall will be Mold Alexandra, who currently play their football in the third tier. They were actually founder members of the League Of Wales when it began, in the 1992/1993 season.
It’s always good to get player reactions to draws and in this instance it was Simon Spender who faced the camera. Going on to feature several times for Wales U-21’s, as a young boy, he played for Mold Alexandra. Therefore, he was an ideal choice.
We should have been playing a Salford City XI on that morning in a behind-closed-doors friendly, but due to a major accident the game didn’t go ahead, as severe traffic delays kicked in. The players trained instead and prior to that, I went with Simon on the balcony at Park Hall for a chat.
