While on holiday in Wales, as always, I was on the lookout for our feathered friends. Whether specifically walking around with my Swarovski binoculars or just out and about generally, my instinct is always to stay tuned in to what’s going on in the natural world around.
As you can see, the bird list isn’t particularly long, but it was mostly just what was seen around the caravan park, which was my patch for the week.
Driving back to the caravan one dark evening in rain, my nature eye spotted a familiar lump on the caravan park road. It was a common toad, off to find somewhere to hibernate no doubt.
I thought afterwards that I should have taken a photograph – echoes of the recent carpe diem blog entry. Anyway, no image just memories. The date was October 5 and as it stands at the moment will be my last sighting of the year.
Birds seen: Blackbird, black headed gull, blue tit, carrion crow, chaffinch, collared dove, common buzzard, cormorant, dunnock, great tit, grey wagtail, herring gull, house martin, house sparrow, jackdaw, jay, linnet, magpie, mallard, meadow pipit, mute swan, pheasant, pied wagtail, raven, red-breasted merganser, red kite, robin, rook , starling, swallow, wheatear, wood pigeon. The video below features a few birds, including the wheatear (lead image). The photographs were taken by my wife.
