One thing you hear anglers say a lot is that they don’t have enough time to go fishing. I can understand that, of course, but I tend to look at the other side of the coin, which is to make the most of what you have rather than bemoan what you don’t.
So many of my sessions are short but with planning you can make the most of limited time. One of the big things is to keep rods made-up and ready to go. On this occasion all I did was arrive at the water’s edge, take off the velcro band, put the rod together, put on a bait and I’m ready to cast out. All in less than one minute.
I’m not criticising, of course, but so many times I see anglers arrive at the same time as me and I’m ready to pack away before they may even have started fishing themselves. It may be that they enjoy the build-up and that’s great, that’s why I say I’m not criticising them. It’s just that I haven’t always got the time, that’s all.
The session in this blog entry was an evening one, an hour or so up to dark. I fished a stretch of the Staffs/Worcs Canal that I haven’t been on for a while. Variety is the spice of life and all that. From the off I had bites and that continued right through to the time I left.
Perch were my target species and I caught 20 plus of those. In addition I also had four ruffe, two gudgeon and a chub. Mostly I fished a worm but occasionally I switched to a clump of maggots. I loose fed red maggots.
I thoroughly enjoyed the session and as I so often say, that’s what angling is all about. We all fish in different ways but as long as you get pleasure from what you do, that’s all that matters.
Some people spend a week in a bivvy with just one fish to show for it. Others catch dozens of tiddlers in a couple of hours. Just enjoy what you do and don’t worry about what others get up to. Live and let live in angling as well as life in general.
