Boat Traffic On The Decline, Ruffe Population Increasing (950)

Now that the schools have opened again after the summer break, the boat traffic on the Staffs/Worcs Canal has noticeably decreased. Although I only had a 45 minute session, it was a weekend morning and not one boat passed. The fish are used to the boats though, there are no issues as far as they are concerned.

Fishing with a whip, the simple set-up that I regularly use, produced numerous gudgeon, two perch and a ruffe. I’m pleasantly surprised at the explosion in the ruffe population recently on the canal. Not that long ago they were very few and far between, now they’re popping up all over the place and at any time of the day as well.

Bait was a single red maggot and I loose fed maggots. I have a tub of them permanently in the fridge at home. There was a time when I hardly fished with them but now my angling habits have changed, due to work commitments, they’re very much on the agenda.
