With the Beacon Football League new season now underway, the Sunday afternoon games present an opportunity to add lots of new venues to the groundhopping list. The first game I picked is the closest to where I live.
My garden borders the Dormston Centre in Sedgley and while I’ve done thousands of miles so far this season alone in pursuit of the beautiful game, this journey involved a short stroll.
The game ended 9-0 to AFC Sporting Gornal – who unsurprisingly go to the top of the table on goal difference. Their opponents, Norton Canes, were second-best from the start and never got going.
If the 3-0 scoreline at the break was game and set it very quickly became match, as the second period saw a steady stream of goals give the home side a more than comfortable victory come the final whistle.
Whether I’m watching or working, if it’s a Champions League encounter in a national stadium or a game between local lads on a playing field, I always enjoy every match I go to.
I’ll certainly be back for more Beacon League fixtures, in fact I’ve pencilled in a game this coming Sunday. I’m going to work through the Paycare Development Division and then move to the Redbox Signmakers Beacon Championship.
In the meantime though it’s Wales v Republic of Ireland on Thursday and The New Saints v Queen’s Park in the Irn-Bru Cup on Saturday. It’s all football, it’s all good.
