After four days in Denmark on football duty, it was back to my first love this morning. If football is my favourite girlfriend then angling is definitely my wife. I have a number of hobbies and things that I enjoy doing, but without doubt, fishing is up there at the top of the pile.
Having said that, as with everything else it is a passion and not an obsession. While in Jutland, I wasn’t bothered that I couldn’t wet a line. I was focused on what I was doing and it didn’t bother me. Once back home though…
Arriving late on Friday evening and after travelling round the clock, I waited until Saturday morning before I headed for the canal. I only had an hour and it was late morning so quite a few boats passed through, nevertheless though I had lots of float activity and caught perch and gudgeon.
Fishing with a whip, you can see the rig in one of the embedded photographs below. The line is 4lb Drennan Team England and the hook is a size 18 Drennan Super Specialist. There is one shot halfway down the line and another a couple of inches away from the hook.
The second shot serves two purposes. Firstly, it gets the bait down quickly to the bottom and then it helps to act as an anchor as even when boats aren’t making their way in or out of the stretch there is often a pull on the water.
I thoroughly enjoyed being back out again and as I often say, regardless of what you catch and what size it may be, that’s what angling is all about.

Very enjoyable visit to the canal on the whip. Simple set-up, simple fishing, but very enjoyable. That’s what angling is all about, or anything else in life for that matter. #StaffsWorcsCanal #Fishing #Angling #WhipFishing #TheGreatOutdoors #Staffordshire #CanalFishing #SwindonStaffordshire #BirminghamAnglersAssociation
