Although it was the opening weekend in the JD Welsh Premier League, it seems like we have never stopped at The New Saints. After a few weeks break after 2017/2018, we were back in training on June 4, and with five European games alone to date, we are already in full swing.
However, there’s still something exciting about the start of a new campaign and regardless of what’s gone on before, I love not only the first game of the season but also the other thirty one as well.
The visitors to Park Hall were Barry Town United. A team with a proud history of their own, both inside and outside of the Welsh national league, it’s been great to see them in the top flight again, following their promotion two seasons ago.
The 5-1 victory was a great start for The New Saints but there will be positives for the visitors to draw on. Regardless of what happened on the pitch though, the fans were superb off it. It’s a long journey from Barry to Park Hall but they remained in great voice throughout, still chanting ‘6-5, we’re gonna win 6-5’ with minutes to go.
It was good to be on TNS Radio and that’s the lead image. A selfie. Always a selfie. As happens as well, we had opposition fans listening in. Although it’s club radio, for me there’s always the big picture of the game in Wales itself.
We want to promote not only The New Saints but also the domestic league. We go on air just before kick-off at each game and the link is on the club website HERE.
On a personal level it was my 24th game of the season. You can never have too much of a good thing and that’s definitely true as far as football is concerned. Check out my groundhopping pages HERE. Click HERE to return to the home page.
Following the game, I interviewed Scott Ruscoe and Greg Draper for TNS TV.
