The final game of my TNS season last night saw me visit New Bucks Head In Telford. The home of AFC Telford, the match itself didn’t involve the club but rather The New Saints Ladies and Shrewsbury Town Ladies, as the two competed in the final of the Tom Farmer Shropshire County Cup final.
In my four full seasons with TNS I’ve been an avid follower of the Ladies’ fortunes, and while I enjoy covering their games very much, I also count myself as a fan. As someone who watches out for a number of teams, if you ask me who I support when it comes to women’s football, the answer is TNS Ladies.
Having seen our girls compete in a number of finals, this was by the far the closest of them all. In fact, if I remember correctly, the last Tom Farmer Shropshire County Cup final between the two, at Shrewsbury Town’s Ground, ended in a comprehensive 6-1 victory for the Saints.
This one had extra time written all over it until deep into the added minutes at the end of the game, up popped Lou Anderson to finally break the deadlock. You can tell you’re a supporter, when even while in the press box you react with spontaneous emotion as the back of the net bulges.
Following the game I interviewed manager, Andy Williams, captain on the night, Hannah Yates, and of course, Lou. Plus a selfie. There’s always a selfie. You can watch those interviews as well as read the match report via the piece I published on the TNS site here.
I felt sorry for Shrewsbury Town, it’s a cruel way to lose a final with seconds to go. However, my joy as far as TNS was concerned was complete. I was really thrilled for them and enjoyed the experience. A great night out with the girls indeed.
