FUN, FUN, FUN (Perch) – Blog entry 623

With a brainstorming meeting at The New Saints in the afternoon on my schedule, I put my spinning rod in the boot and on the way back dropped on Woodlands Lodge for an hour. The venue is on the Kinver Freeliners ticket, and although quite weedy at the moment, nevertheless there was a small section of open water to have a go at.

With a Mepps Comet number three doing the business for me on my last visit, which was also under similar circumstances, I kept that on to tempt the perch. And again, it produced the goods. Nothing big, in fact I didn’t even need the landing net, but nevertheless great fun and that’s what angling should be all about.

My next few sessions were on the local Black Country canal network system. I fish the spot regularly and have never seen – or caught – anything decent there. The water is crystal-clear at times and you can see everything on the bottom: slabs, discarded clothes, bicycle wheels and of course the old urban favourite, the shopping trolley.

It’s still a great feeling though, whether it be 2oz or 2lb, when a perch hits the lure as it spins through the water. In the accompanying video I go through the rod and reel that I use when spinning. I get asked a lot what gear I fish with, which is understandable of course.

If someone is starting out on a particular style of fishing then it’s good to know what others are using. At the very least it instills confidence if you’re going to invest in some tackle yourself. With such an array of stuff on the market it helps to perhaps narrow it down a little.

However, I do point out in the video that I’m not endorsing the rod and reel, just saying that’s what I fish with. My granddaughter, Nyah, put in a brief appearance as you can see and I’m hoping to get her out for a short, sunny, easy-going session this summer on a venue where she has an excellent chance of catching her first fish. As they say, watch this space.

My final outing was again on the way back from The New Saints. This time a small team of us had been out and about in Oswestry spreading the good news of TNS. You can see some of the photos in the video, including my special passenger in the back seat. As for the fishing, I caught, but all small. However, as I say in the video, although I didn’t catch anything big this week, it was all fun, fun, fun. (Published June 20 2015)
