One of the ‘problems’ (not that you can really call it that though) of being an all-rounder is that you can’t fish for everything at the same time. With so many species, not to mention venues and tactics, competing for your time, even for someone who fishes a lot as I do, you still have to put certain things on the shelf.
Anyway, I didn’t want my carp fishing to gather too much dust, so that’s what I got up to this week. Deciding to fish a local venue that is anything but a ‘runs water’, I went with the target of one fish being a result.
I got off to a decent start, as not only did I bank a carp but also bonus tench as well. Mind you, with the tench coming around the 3.00 am mark, I can’t see many dedicated carpers calling them a bonus. That’s one of the beauties of being an all-rounder though, as there is no such thing in your vocabulary as a ‘nuisance fish’.
I did have a problem however, as the grass carp went across the other rod quite close in and I had an almighty tangle that made netting difficult. As I brought the fish in, the leverage from the other rod took it back out again. Knowing how difficult it is to catch fish from the venue anyway, I was just extremely grateful when it slipped into the mesh of the landing net.
My second, and final overnighter of the week, came at the end of a busy day. I’d been up at 7.00am and off to Wales for a football game, returning home twelve hours later. After changing from my working clothes (a Welsh Premier League press pass and a TNS bodywarmer) into my fishing gear, I had my first meal of the day (beans on toast), loaded the car and made the lake by late dusk. Don’t let the grass grow.
I drifted off to sleep at about 11.00 pm and didn’t stir until first light. When you’re out night fishing, that’s the last thing that you want isn’t it. When I go home in the morning I want to feel worn out due to the fact that I’ve been playing big fish all night. On this occasion it wasn’t to be, but as always, I enjoyed myself.
For those of you who have commented about missing the video part of the blog, it’s back to business again next week. I thought that I’d enjoy the ‘freedom’ of not having a camcorder but I’ve actually missed putting videos together. It’s probably been as much to do with the nature clips as the fishing. I’ve been seeing lots of good stuff and thinking, I wish I could capture that for a video.
Finally, and talking of videos, why not check out my YouTube channel by clicking HERE. The videos are listed in species categories, so everything is laid out in order. Why not subscribe and keep up to date with all uploads? See you next week. (Published May 16 2015)
